It was confirmed yesterday (2/10/20), Honda is to leave Formula 1 at the end of 2021, which means Red Bull and Alpha Tauri needing to find an engine supplier for 2022 with just three engine companies.
Honda said the move was a result of the transformation of the car industry away from internal combustion engines.
Honda returned to F1 in 2015 and spent a difficult three seasons with McLaren with limited results.
Honda switch to Toro Rosso for 2018 and then Red Bull itself for 2019, and have won a total of five Grand Prix wins over the last two years.
In my opinion, a surprise in one way, not a surprise in other way. A surprise in the reason on environment targets and the end of the internal combustion engine rather than focus on blaming the current pandemic that could follow a possible global recession. And not a surprise as this is Honda fifth time they have cancelled a Formula 1 project in the last 55 years.
So what next for Red Bull and Alpha Tauri. My guess a return for one or both teams return to Renault in 2022, if it was up-to Renault they would possibly take Alpha Tauri instead of Red Bull. Another option could be Red Bull buying Honda Power-Units outright and re-brand them as Red Bull engines and continue to develop them or even go to someone like Cosworth ask them for a V6 engine to develop while Red Bull Technologies develop the hybrid side for a Red Bull-Cosworth Power-Unit perhaps.
Bye Bye Honda once again.
