2015 McLaren 650S GT3

McLaren has unveiled their new GT3 contender that will go on sale to customers in time for next season. The McLaren 650S GT3, which was launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday (27/6/14), will succeeds the MP4-12C GT3 for next season.

The 650S GT3 is built around the same carbon monocoque and 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine from the MP4-12C GT3 race car. The biggest change, apart from the wider bodywork carried over from the road car, is a switch from a Ricardo to an Xtrac gearbox.

The revised aerodynamics have also allowed McLaren to improve cooling over the MP4-12C without increasing drag.

Because the new car retains the monocoque and engine of the MP4-12C, existing owners will be able to upgrade to 650S specification.

McLaren is planning to build 15 new cars for next season and hopes to have a further 15 upgraded cars running.

The 650S GT3 has already completed a shakedown, and will begin testing in anger with two day test at Snetterton next week.

Standing re-starts after safety car to be introduced next season in F1

Next season, Formula 1 is to introduce standing re-starts following a safety-car periods. The move, intended to make place changes more likely at a re-start, is one of a series of rule changes introduced by governing body the FIA. Among them, the rules on noses will be changed to prevent the 'anteater' noses that predominate this season.

As, F1 bosses feel that the current rolling starts behind a safety car do not provide sufficient excitement, because there is almost never any overtaking. A standing start increases the chances of drivers gaining or losing positions.

The safety car will be retained to control the pace of the field while any accident damage is cleared because it provides a commercial benefit to F1 - Mercedes pay to provide the safety and medical cars.

And so here is my opinion on this, if it ain't broken don't fix it. Personally, I think this new rule is not the greatest idea as it would damage the starts to a Grand Prix as it won't make it special anymore.

Lets change sports for a minute to athletics in a 100 metres race for Olympic gold. Race starts on the marks we have Usian Bolt leading. But then at 50 metres mark, we have the runners going back on their marks again to finish off the race. It they did that it would lost a bit of the specialness of the start.

The new safety car rule is to provide sufficient excitement to the F1 audience. Personally as an F1 fan the racing is great this season, minus the noise. And altering the rules will bring in the viewers is not the right way.

The problem for the reason why the audience figures have gone down due to three reasons:

  • The noise of the F1 cars of the new V6 Turbo Hybrid is one, as they're too quite, I think the audience is missing the noise from the old V8s from last year.

  • Two, the interaction with social media from the FOM side and not using YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to get more of the audience in, even Bernie Ecclestone saying it won't help the sport because "we're commercial" compared to other series such as BTCC, MotoGP and V8 Supercars to name a few that Social Media that does help their series.

  • And finally the third one is that F1 is under pay per view channels nowadays, instead focusing on staying on the free channels within the European countries, which a few years back their ratings was as nearly as big to compare what the Olympics and the World Cup gets. Which I am guessing in 2014 in their ratings won't be as big what the WWE will get on a Monday night over in America. That is end of my rant for that.

Others rule changes include tweaks to the number of tests and reductions in the allowed amount of research and development, both aimed at cutting costs.

The three pre-season tests will have to take place in Europe, whereas until now teams could test further afield, and the number of in-season tests will be reduced from four two-day tests to two.

Two of the permitted four days must be reserved for drivers with limited experience of F1, in order to make it easier the next generation of drivers.

Among other cost-cutting plans, teams will be allowed to use only four engines per season, down from the current five, unless there are more than 20 races.

The FIA said the changes to the nose rules would "ensure improved safety and provide more aesthetically pleasing structures".

Many of this year's cars have narrow protuberances forward of the main nose structure to satisfy rules that were aimed at making the noses lower for safety reasons but in which teams found loopholes.

Overall, I hope we don't see as much of the safety car next season.

2014 Austrian Grand Prix Review

Round eight of the F1 season, a quick review of the Austrian Grand Prix Review, and thoughts on the race itself.

Good points

  • Mercedes (Nico Rosberg, race win; Lewis Hamilton, finished 2nd)
  • Williams (Valtteri Bottas, finished 3rd; Felipe Massa, finished 4th)
  • Fernando Alonso (finisehd 5th)
  • Sergio Pérez (finished 6th)
  • Kevin Magnussen (finished 7th)
  • Jules Bianchi (finished 15th, ahead of Marussia team-mate Max Chilton, both Caterham drivers and Esteban Gutiérrez)

Bad points

  • Red Bull Racing (Daniel Ricciardo, finished 8th; Sebastian Vettel, DNF, Electronics)
  • Toro Rosso (Daniil Kvyat, DNF, Suspension; Jean-Éric Vergne, DNF, Brakes)
  • Jenson Button (finished 11th)
  • Esteban Gutiérrez (finished 19th)

Overall, I thought it was a good race to watch. It was going to be either a fairy tail race win with both WIlliams drivers could win as both Williams drivers are on the front row of the grid. Or a predictable race win with both Mercedes drivers. Sadly with 40 laps to go the fairy tail rafce win disappear with Nico Rosberg took the race lead and 40 laps later the race win to give Nico Rosberg his third race win of the season

While, team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished in second place once again to give Mercedes another one-two finish, despite qualifying in ninth place after an error in qualifying.

Meanwhile, Valtteri Bottas in the Williams finish on the final step of the podium in third place, for his first ever Formula 1 career podium and Williams first podium of the season.

2014 24 Hours of Le Mans Review

As the title says above a 24 Hours of Le Mans Review of the race. Round 3 for 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship at Le Mans.

This was an unpredictable race to predict with how strong of each three manufactures had in them, we had #8 Toyota leading for the first half of the race, until 14th hour when an electrical problem cause them to retired. Then #1 Audi lead, but troubles with the turbo caused them to slow down. Then, #20 Porsche lead with three hours to go, but gearbox problems cost them both LMP1-H Porsches' not finishing the race. Then the #2 Audi Sport Team Joest team took the lead and won the race overall and WEC LMP1-H class in their R18 e-tron quatrro with drivers Benoit Treluyer, Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer managed to do 379 laps altogether in dry/wet conditions to this years 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

This was Audi's 13th 24 Hours of Le Mans outright win in the last 15 years. While second was the second Audi Sport Team Joest of Tom Kristensen, Lucas di Grassi and Marc Gene to make it an Audi one-two finish. They were three laps down from the leaders at the end.  Meanwhile, Toyota Racing team of Anthony Davidson, Nicolas Lapierre and Sebastien Buemi came in third place in their Toyota TS030 Hybrid, five lap down from the leaders after the #7 Toyota crashed heavly on the main strait early on in the race.

Three minutes highlights package of the race below from Michelin's own Youtube channel. So enjoy.

While, Porsche return to LMP1 at Le Mans for the first time in 16 years turned sour. The #20 Porsche of Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard an opportunity to fight for victory, putting the 919 Hybrid into the lead with just three hours to go. But, gearbox problems cost them a chance of winning the race and also finishing the race as they were Not classified for not passing the finishing line at the end with 346 laps (would have finished in thirteen place and 33 laps down from the leaders). While #14 of Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas and Neel Jani had the same problems too, as them were as-well Not classified for not passing the finishing line at the end with 348 laps (would have finished in eleven place 31 laps down from the leaders). So a high and low day for Porsche on their return to Le Mans.

Forth place was Rebellion Racing team of Nicolas Prost, Nick Heidfeld and Mathias Beche in their Rebellion R-One with a Toyota RV8KLM 3.4 L V8 engine to win LMP1-L class (a new category this season, designed solely for privateers without hybrid systems in their cars). But, his brakes failed and losing his ERS in mid-race cost Hamilton any changing of winning this years race. While, Rosberrg lost his losing ERS in mid-race, which he lost 2 seconds a lap. Which concludes with three laps to go when Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo pass Nico Rosberg for the lead on lap 68 of 70 to win his first Grand Prix. Making him the forth Australian to win a Grand Prix. And Red Bull's first Grand Prix win of the season.

While Nico Rosberg finished in second place. Meanwhile, the other Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel finished in third place to complete the podium positions for this years' Canadian Grand Prix.

Next stop Red Bull Ring for the return for the first time in eleven years for the Austrian Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Welcome to the winners club Daniel Ricciardo.

Millennium Racing withdraws from next weeks 24 Hours of Le Mans

The Millennium Racing LMP2 team has pulled out of next weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans due to the teams funding from sponsors.

The squad run by Delta-ADR, which won LMP2 in five of the eight races in last year's WEC, made two entries for the 2014 series under the Millennium banner, but was forced to miss the first two rounds at Silverstone and Spa and withdraw from Le Mans courtesy of its funding issues as they only to have one entry for Le Mans before the announcement.
