Alex Zanardi returns to motorsport with BMW in the Blancpain Sprint Series

Former Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi will make a full-time return to motorsport as a BMW factory driver in the 2014 Blancpain Sprint Series with the after a four-year absence it was confirmed on tuesday (21/1/14).

Zanardi, who won two gold medals in hand bike racing at the 2012 London Paralympics (in the Individual H4 time trial and the Individual H4 road race at Brands Hatch were the event is held, followed by a silver medal in the Mixed H1-4 Team Relay), he will race a BMW Z4 GT3 for the same ROAL Motorsport squad with which he contested the European Touring Car Championship in 2004 and the world championship from 2005-09.

The two-time CART title winner will drive his V8-powered BMW Z4 GT3 alone in the one-hour races of the championship, formerly known as the FIA GT Series, after a rule change last year designed to encourage physically-challenged drivers. His BMW will be specially adapted with the hand-controls he finetuned during his return to racing in touring cars in the wake of the Champ Car accident in which he lost both legs at Lausitz in 2001.

In my opionon, this could be good for Zanardi racing in the Blancpain Sprint Series this season. Also, testing the BMW M3 DTM car test from December 2012 at the Nurburgring was the much influence his to return to motor-racing this season.

Zanardi's programme will encompass six of the seven weekends that make up the Sprint Series, which will leave him time to continue his preparations for a Paralympic return in Rio in 2016.

ROAL motorsport will field two Z4s in both the Sprint Series and the Blancpain Endurance Series as-well.

As for Alex Zanardi, good luck for new season in the Blancpain Sprint Series this season with the BMW Z4 GT3, lets hope a race win is in the books this season.

Eric Boullier leaves Lotus, McLaren possibly for Boullier?

On Friday morning (24/1/13) it was announce that Lotus F1 Team Principal Eric Boullier has departed from his role as Team Principal of the team with immediate effect. Team owner and co-chairman Gérard Lopez will step into the position ahead of the 2014 season.

Boullier, who has guided Lotus to fourth position for the past two seasons, including two race wins for Kimi Räikkönen at his time at Lotus.

So here's the thing, I don't blame Eric Boullier leaving Lotus with the news that Lotus are around £120 million in debt (£80 million owned by Genni, the owners of the Lotus F1 Team), big Technical people leaving the team from last season, which includes former Technical Director James Allison leaving to Ferrari. And the big one of Kimi Räikkönen leaving the team to move to Ferrari this season, which includes not paying Räikkönen for his last season at Lotus, which is rumoured around £16 million.

Also, the team will not at next weeks four day test at Jerez, to test the new Lotus E22. Instead the new Lotus E22 will be ready for the second test at Bahrain in the middle of February.

Now, that Eric Boullier has left Lotus, he has been tipped to join McLaren. The development comes amid intense speculation over McLaren's future Formula 1 plans. With Ron Dennis announcing his return as group CEO at the end of last week and making clear that there will be organisational changes in the coming months, Martin Whitmarsh is expected to be relieved of his Team Principal duties and replace by Eric Boullier instead.

Some big question marks ahead for Lotus this season, are they going to be competitive enough to fight in the top four of the constructors championship this season? are we going to see the team at the start of the season? are we going to even see the team at the last race of the season? Who knows.

Paul di Resta returns to the DTM with Mercedes

On Tuesday (21/1/14) it was announce that former Force India driver Paul di Resta will return to the DTM with Mercedes in 2014 after losing his Formula 1 drive with Force India to Sergio Perez.

The 2010 DTM champion was left without an F1 drive after Force India opted for the former McLaren driver to partner Nico Hulkenberg.

In my opinion a good decision for Paul di Resta to return to a championship were he won in the DTM with Mercedes. Also, there is a strong possibility that Paul di Resta is closing on a Formula 1 reserve driver role with Mercedes, which means a likely to combine his DTM race programme with an F1 reserve deal to help keep him in the frame for a Formula 1 drive in 2015, lets hope as I felt he is a fast race driver and should've been driving a top 5 team this season in my opinion.

Anyway, good luck to Paul di Resta in DTM this season.

Giedo van der Garde joins Sauber as reserve driver

After the Caterham driver announcement from yesterday (21/1/14), yesterday it was also announce that former Caterham driver Giedo van der Garde will be the Sauber Formula 1 team's test and reserve driver during the 2014 season.

Van der Garde made his grand prix debut with Caterham last season, after four years competing in the GP2 Series. Sauber said the former Formula Renault 3.5 series champion will be driving during some Friday practice sessions and "several tests" in the season ahead.

It's Official: Caterham signs Kobayashi, Ericsson for 2014 Formula 1 season

Yesterday (21/1/14) it was announce that Caterham has signed grand prix returnee Kamui Kobayashi and GP2 graduate Marcus Ericsson for the 2014 Formula 1 season. Meaning, Kobayashi and Ericsson replace both Giedo van der Garde and Charles Pic this season at Caterham.

The deal brings Kobayashi back into F1 after a season out and driving with Ferrari's GT programme in the World Endurance Championship. While, Ericsson moves up to F1 after four years in GP2. Becoming the first Swede driver to start a grand prix since Stefan Johansson back in 1991.

Not a surprise with the news in my opinion that both Kobayashi and Ericsson will be signed. Its been rumours since Brazil that Ericsson will race with the team and since Christmas that Kobayashi will be signed to the team. But, personally I would have picked Kobayashi, but would have kept kept Giedo van der Garde for another season at Caterham at least for another season in my opinion as he was a fast driver.

It was also announce yesterday that 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 series champion Robin Frijns will join Alexander Rossi in Caterham's Formula 1 test and reserve driver line-up in 2014. While, Alexander Rossi and Rio Haryanto will be part of Caterham's GP2 line up this season at Caterham Racing.

With Caterham's announcement completes the 2014 F1 grid ahead of the start of winter testing at Jerez next Tuesday.

Charles Pic has parted company with Caterham

Caterham team boss Cyril Abiteboul has confirmed in a television interview in France that Charles Pic, who joined the team on a multi-year agreement ahead of the 2013 campaign, has lost his seat.

Pic, made his Formula 1 debut with Marussia back in 2012, before switching to Caterham in 2013.

Last year, the Frenchman partnered Giedo van der Garde at Caterham, whose future at the team is also in doubt.

"Unfortunately, Charles will not be with us [in 2014]," Abiteboul said in an interview with France's Infosport+.

"It is unfortunate that the partnership has ended. However, I want to thank Charles for the job he did last year."

Not a surprise with the news in my opinion that Pic was dropped from Caterham, I felt that he wasn't impressive last season and wasn't as fast as his team-mate Giedo van der Garde from last season, he wasn't as fast or dominating as his pervious team-mate Timo Glock two seasons back at Marussia either.

No word of yet who will be driving at Caterham this season. But, strong rumours are reporting that former Toyota and Sauber driver Kamui Kobayashi and long-time GP2 racer Marcus Ericsson will be driving for the team next season. But, an official announcement is expected on Tuesday morning (21/1/14).

The all new Chevrolet Corvette C7.R

This week, Chevrolet has unveiled their all new car that will replace the old Corvette C6.R in this seasons United SportsCar Championship season, and will race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans later this season with Corvette Racing. Their 2014 race car will be the all new Chevrolet Corvette C7.R, which was revealed at the Detroit Auto Show yesterday (13/1/14).

The new car will more than likely use the old C6.R 5.5 litre V8. The C7.R will also race on Michelin tyres.

The C7.R will make its race debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona of the United SportsCar Championship opener in a weeks time.

Corvette Racing have also announced the driver pairings for the United SportsCar Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans campaign, Antonio García and Jan Magnussen in #3 car; and Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner will drive in the #4 car. Confirmed: Marussia retains Max Chilton for 2014

Today (11/01/14), Marussia confirmed they will retain Max Chilton for the 2014 Formula 1 season, and drive alongside last seasons team-mate Jules Bianchi.

This was no sursprise with the news as this would happen for a while to retain Max Chilton Also, this is a very good decision from Marussia to keep Max Chilton for another season, another season would help him in my opinion to improve on his race pace and experience inside a Formula 1 car.

With Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi as their drivers at Marussia next season, and Ferrari V6 turbo engines for next season. Things are looking up for the Marussia team.

Top Six Hart Engine F1 cars, Brian Hart 1936 - 2014

With recent news that British engineer Brian Hart (7 September 1936 – 5 January 2014) who passed away on Sunday after a long battle against illness. Hart’s company built F1 engines for a number of teams, including Toleman, RAM, Haas Lola and in the mid-1990s with Jordan, Arrows, and Minardi, taking five podiums in total - including the first for both Ayrton Senna (in 1984) and Rubens Barrichello (in 1994).

He also raced himself and actually qualified for the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in 1967 – his sole outing in F1.

So this post is the top six Hart engine F1 cars, this post won't have all-star of Formula 1 cars from the Cosworth post. But, this post will be more of the underdog teams using underdogs of engines in Formula 1 history.

Starting with Number 6:

Number 6: 1996 Footwork FA17

No change with Michael Schumacher after skiing accident

Former Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher continues to be 'constantly' monitored and remains 'stable but critical' at the Grenoble University Hospital where he is being treated following his skiing accident.

Doctors issued a short statement on Monday, and while it did not provide any new information, that in itself can be considered somewhat reassuring as at the very least, it seems there has be no further complications.

“The clinical state of Mr Michael Schumacher is considered as stable and is constantly monitored by the medical treatments that are administered to him. However, the medical team responsible underlines that they will not stop to consider Michael's condition as critical. The privacy of the patient demands that we are not going into details of his treatment, and this is why we do not plan any press conferences anymore for the time being.”

The missive also urged the media to 'stick to the information given by the medical team in charge of the patient or given by his management, as this is the only valid information', a reference to reports on Saturday that he was 'out of danger', something that prompted his spokesperson, Sabine Kehm to say much the same. Indeed the statement today is almost a carbon copy of that from January 4.

Meanwhile the prosecutors' that are investigating Schumacher's accident have confirmed they will hold a press conference this Wednesday [January 8] in Albertville and will reveal their initial findings then.

Kehm has already told the media she understands the German's fall was just 'very, very unfortunate' and a case of 'extreme bad luck'.

Five predictions for 2014

Happy new year to all, first post of 2014. And this post is five predictions for 2014, if this happen or not this more of a fun post on what might happen.

Number 1, 13-0 for VW in the WRC this season.
This might not sound stupid as it seems. Last year Volkswagen won 10 Rally wins in the VW Polo R WRC with Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala. And this year in the WRC, with no Sébastien Loab at Citroen and weaker Citroen team and M-Sport team as-well. Also, a development year for Hyundai this season. Volkswagen doing a white wash of rally wins this season may happen.

Number 2, Nico Rosberg Formula 1 World Champion 2014.
This might not sound stupid as it seems as-well. Nico Rosberg Formula 1 World Champion this season, why? with the new turbo engines coming in this season and aerodynamics rules too it will be a fresh slate to all the teams. And rumour has it Mercedes has the most powerful engine. If Rosberg wins more races than in 2013, and if Rosberg car is reliable, and if Mercedes produce a fast race Nico Rosberg could win the 2014 F1 drivers' title ahead of Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Number 3, Toyota to win the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Really? yes really, here's the thing Porsche is returning as a manufacture to Le Mans this season. So we're going to see a VW civil war between Audi and Porsche to win this years World Endurance Championship and 24 hours of Le Mans race. And Toyota have not shown their new LMP1 contender compared to Audi and Porsche, it could be the year for Toyota to succeeded at Le Mans as the underdog.

Number 4, Nicky Hayden to score more points than the works Ducati riders.
Yet again this might not sound stupid as it seems. With Nicky Hayden leaving Ducati at the end of last season. This season his return back to Honda with Aspar with the new open spec RCV1000R . And last season Ducati was a very poor bike once again, and this season could be another repeat. Don't be surprise that Hayden will score more points than both Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow in the standings. But, Nicky Hayden top in open class this season? more than likely either Scott Redding or Aleix Espargaró for that title.

Number 5, Marussia or Caterham finally scoring a point in Formula 1.
And my last prediction could be the most shocker of them all, with the new turbo engines coming in Formula 1 this season and aerodynamics rules too it will be a fresh slate to all the teams. And with that teams like Marussia and Caterham who have not scored world championship points in their four seasons so far, they might have the opportunity to score points this season with all the teams on a clear slate so be surprised if that happens.

As I said at the start of the post, this is a fun post on what might happen, would any prediction might happen? maybe one or two, I have to wait till late November to find out.

End of post for now, new post soon, bye.
