2012 European Grand Prix Review, The Good: Alonso, The Bad (luck): Vettel and The Ugly: Maldonado

The eighth race of the F1 season at Valencia, 2012 European Grand Prix Review and thoughts on the race and on Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Pastor Maldonado too.

Good points

  • Fernando Alonso (won the race from 11th place)
  • Kimi Räikkönen (finished 2nd)
  • Mercedes AMG (Michael Schumacher finished 3rd, first podium since his comeback, Nico Rosberg finished 6th)
  • Mark Webber (finished 4th, despite starting from 19th place in qualifying from a DRS problem)
  • Force India (Nico Hülkenberg finished 5th, Paul Di Resta finished 7th)
  • Bruno Senna (finished 10th, despite a drive through penalty he didn't deserved in my opinion)
  • Caterham F1 (Vitaly Petrov finished 13th, Heikki Kovalainen finished 14th)
  • Charles Pic (finished 15th, not lap at all and ahead of both HRT drivers)

Also another note: from qualifying 1, Charles Pic qualifying time at 23rd place was 1:42.675. While the 107% time was 1:45.742. Good job from HRT and Murussia to qualifying strong at Valencia.

Bad points

  • Sebastian Vettel (DNF, Alternator)
  • Romain Grosjean (DNF, Alternator)
  • McLaren (Jenson Button finished 8th, Lewis Hamilton 19th-DNF, collision with Pastor Maldonado)
  • Pastor Maldonado (finished 12th, could have finished 3rd but collision with Lewis Hamilton of the penultimate lap, so therefore he had to get a new front nose on his F1 car to finished 10th. Then after the race the stewards gives Maldonado a 20 second penalty for "rejoining the track in an unsafe manner". His penalty dropped him from 10th to 12th.)
  • STR (Daniel Ricciardo finished 11th if he didn't had a collusion with Petrov at the end with a broken front nose he would scored points, Jean-Éric Vergne DNF, an avoidable collision with Heikki Kovalainen will be given a ten-place grid penalty for Silverstone)
  • Filipe Massa (finished 16th and lapped, but collision between Kobayashi in the middle of the race, leaving Massa with a puncture)
  • Kamui Kobayashi (DNF, collision with Felipe Massa, a five-place grid penalty for Kobayashi at Silverstone)
  • Timo Glock (DNF, Illness throughout the weekend)

I thought it wasn't a good race to watch when Sebastian Vettel was leading with a 20 second gap ahead of Romain Grosjean, until lap 27 when Safety car came out for the collusion between Jean-Éric Vergne and Heikki Kovalainen. Then on lap 34, Ferando Alonso who was third, immediately took the opportunity to pass Grosjean round the outside of turn 1. Then the big surprise, race leader Vettel lost drive coming out of turn 10 and he had to retire, with what was later said to be an alternator failure. Alonso took the lead ahead of Grosjean, until Grosjean retired with the same problem seven laps later. Which lead to Alonso with a home win at Valencia, and his second race win of the season in his Ferrari. And overall the best F1 race from the Valencia street circuit.

As for Alonso (the good of the race), despite he qualified 11th place of the grid, he showed why he can win the drivers championship this year with those overtaking moves to take second when Vettel retired to take the lead then to take the race win. Despite the car is not the best car on the grid this season.

But to be honest, Sebastian Vettel (the bad luck of the race) should have won the European Grand Prix, with an Alternator problem (the same problem Romain Grosjean had as-well) giving him his first DNF of the season. But, Sebastian Vettel can still win his third world title and still only 26 points behind Alonso, he can still do it.

And then, Pastor Maldonado (the ugly of the race) could have finished third place, but a collision on the penultimate lap with Lewis Hamilton, so therefore he had to get a new front nose on his F1 car to finished 10th. Then after the race the stewards gives Maldonado a 20 second penalty for "rejoining the track in an unsafe manner". His penalty dropped him from 10th to 12th.

If I was one of the stewards for that race, I would have given
Pastor Maldonado a ten-place grid penalty for Silverstone, as-well a 20 second penalty. Because, Lewis Hamilton tyre's had it, he could have waited on the last lap overtake Hamilton on the first corner. Maldonado would have finished third, Hamilton would have sixth place maybe and Michael Schumacher wouldn't be on the podium. End of story.

Next stop Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. That is all, another post soon. Bye.

WRC Round 7 Recap and IRC Round 5 and 6 Recaps, Gareth Roberts: 1987-2012

Recaps of last round of WRC and the last two rounds from the IRC. First, with Round 5 and 6 of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge rounds at Targa Florio Rally and Belgium Ypres Westhoek Rally. Fifth round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge at the Targa Florio Rally (15-16th June) was won by Jan Kopecký in his Škoda Fabia S2000 ahead of current IRC Champion Andreas Mikkelsen in his Škoda who finished in second place in the rally.

But, the rally will be remembered by the death of Gareth Roberts, co-driver to Craig Breen, who got killed on stage eight of the rally, Roberts died when their car impacted with a guardrail on the eighth stage of the all-asphalt event, near Palermo in Sicily. Breen was unhurt in the accident, it was on the same stage last year were Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica suffered his crash on. So the rally was abandoned after the tragedy. Thoughts go to friends and family of Gareth Roberts.

Gareth Roberts: 1987-2012

While in this weekends IRC Round 6 at Ypres Westhoek Rally in Belgium (21-23 June). Was won by works Škoda driver of Juho Hanninen in his Škoda Fabia S2000, 47 seconds ahead of Freddy Loix in his Peugeot 207 S2000. While, Pieter Tsjoen finished third in his Škoda. While current IRC Champion and points leader Andreas Mikkelsen dropped back from Hanninen when he lost a minute in a ditch on Friday night, and then had to retire with damage from another trip off the road early on Saturday.

While in this weekends round seven of the World rally Championship at the Rally of New Zealand (22 -24 June) was won by Eight times World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb in his Citroen DS3, 30 seconds ahead of Citreon team-mate Mikko Hirvonen, to make a Citreon one-two. While, Petter Solberg finished third in his Ford Fiesta RS, while team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala finished 8th place in the rally. Also, mention to Ken Block in his Monster Energy Ford Fiesta who finished 9th with his second outing for this season WRC, he will only do another WRC round next time in Finland in August. That will be his last WRC round for this season for the American Rally driver.

Sébastien Loeb is still leading the WRC drivers championship, while Citreon are still leading the manufuters championship from Ford. Highlights bellow, enjoy.

F1 European Grand Prix Predictions

So this weekends Formula 1 European Grand Prix on the streets of Valencia. So predictions for the race itself and the first question are we going to an eight different winner in eight different races? my answer I think it's gonna be difficult to see it happen. But, if it does happen, I possibly guess it will be either Michael Schumacher, Romain Grosjean or Kimi Raikkonen can possibly do it this weekend.

Before I do the predictions, I am writing this after both Friday practice sessions, where Pastor Maldonado and Sebastian Vettel were both fastest in each Friday practice sessions.

So predictions for the race, Sebastian Vettel for the win in his Red Bull, Lewis Hamilton second in his McLaren, Mark Webber third in his Red Bull. Don't forget Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Pastor Maldonado, Sergio Perez, two Lotus F1 drivers and two Mercedes AMG drivers either.

That is all. Bye.

MotoGP British Grand Prix thoughts and Jorge Lorenzo staying at Yamaha for two more years

Quick thoughts on the race from Sundays race at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and thoughts on Jorge Lorenzo staying at Yamaha for two more years.

The race itself was a very good race and a great win for Jorge Lorenzo at Silverstone, on his works Yamaha, a great battle from the start to the middle of the race between himself and Casey Stoner, then Jorge Lorenzo took the lead from Casey Stoner till the checkered flag. A great win from Jorge Lorenzo. Casey Stoner meanwhile on his Honda finished second overall, three seconds behind Lorenzo. While, Dani Pedrosa on his Honda two tenths behind team-mate Stoner at the end, who finished third.

Quick mention to both Alvaro Bautista on his works Honda Gresini started on pole for Sundays race and did a solid job on the Gresini Honda, running with the leaders throughout the race and eventually taking a fine fourth place, five seconds behind Lorenzo.

While, Tech 3 Yamaha rider and British rider Cal Crutchlow was the rider of the race, charging from the back of the grid to sixth place despite having an injured foot from Saturday morning's crash. Crutchlow made a stunning run through the field, stealing sixth from Nicky Hayden, on the very last lap. Cal Crutchlow was fifthteen seconds behind Lorenzo. Also, there has been a rumour that Cal Crutchlow could be on a works Ducati rider next season by a few sources.

The remaining British rider on the MotoGP grid James Ellison, finished 14th place on his Paul Bird Racing spec Aprilia, 74 seconds behind Lorenzo.

Speaking of Lorenzo, it was announced last Tuesday (12/6/12) that MotoGP 2010 world champion Jorge Lorenzo will be staying at Yamaha for two more years, until the end of the 2014 season. My opinion a brilliant decision from Yamaha for keeping Lorenzo till the end of 2014. If, Lorenzo would have gone to Honda in 2013, which Jorge Lorenzo admits rejecting a multi-million pound offer to join Honda as Casey Stoner’s replacement for next season, before signing his Yamaha contract. I personally think that no one couldn't replace Lorenzo at Yamaha. And possibly Jorge Lorenzo is best rider at this moment of time and definitely for the next few years in my opinion. And Lorenzo wanted to stay at Yamaha at the first place too. So, a very good decision from Yamaha to keep Jorge Lorenzo for the next two years.

So with Jorge Lorenzo staying at Yamaha next season, who else could replace Casey Stoner for 2013 at Repsol Honda? Marc Marquez, Stefan Bradl or Valentino Rossi perhaps? who knows time will tell.

Anyway, end of post/blog for now, that is all, Bye.

2012 Le Mans 24 Hours Review

As the title says above a Le Mans 24 Hours Review of the race. Round 3 for 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship at Le Mans. And this years Le Mans 24 hours will be remembered for Audi domination. Audi Sport Team Joest team won the race overall and WEC LMP1 class in their R18 e-tron quatrro with drivers André Lotterer, Marcel Fässler and Benoît Tréluyerto and managed to do 378 laps altogether. And the No. 1 Audi was ahead of the second Audi R18 e-tron of Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello, who were a lap down from the winners. Third was Oliver Jarvis, Marco Bonanomi and Mike Rockenfeller in their Audi R18 Ultra, three laps behind the leaders. While, the second Audi R18 Ultra of Romain Dumas, Loïc Duval and Marc Gene finished in fifth place, twelve laps down, to making an Audi R18 one-two-three-five at Le Mans.

While, Toyota returns to Le Mans as a manufacture for the first time since 1999, was a bad race for the Japanese brand. Despite, some impressive lap times to match Audis' early on the 24 hours. Car 8 of Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin crashed out after six hours when Anthony Davidson was lapping car 81 of the AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia GTC of Piergiuseppe Perazzini, the two cars collided at the end of the Mulsanne Straight. The collision turned Davidson's car sideways before becoming airborne, flipping through the air, before landing back on its wheels and made heavy contact with the barriers. Davidson was later transferred to hospital where he was later diagnosed with fractures to the eleventh and twelfth thoracic vertebrae of his back.

While, car 7 of Alexander Wurz, Kazuki Nakajima and Nicolas Lapierre did not finished either. At the seventh hour, Nakajima was third at the time, at the Porsche curves collision with Satoshi Motoyama in the DeltaWing. The DeltaWing was sent crashing into the wall at the Porsche curves in the process, while the Toyota pitted initially for a new rear section. Did not survive for much further for the Toyota TS030 Hybrid. So, that was the end for Toyota for this years 24 hour race.

Top non Audi or Toyota LMP1 car at Le Mans was Rebellion Racing of Nicolas Prost, Nick Heidfeld and Neel Jani in their Lola B12/60 with a Toyota 3.4 L V8 was 4th overall, 11 laps behind the leaders, but a lap ahead of one of the R18 Ultra's of Romain Dumas, Loïc Duval and Marc Gene, who finished in 5th place.

While, Highcroft Racing Deltawing Nissan 1.6 L Turbo race car of Marino Franchitti, Michael Krumm and Satoshi Motoyama did not finished the 24 hours after race instance with Kazuki Nakajima Toyota TS030 Hybrid at the seventh hour, only managing 75 laps. But, Satoshi Motoyama did a heart rending attempts to re-inject life back into the ground breaking Nissan DeltaWing, ending the car's assault on the Le Mans 24 hours and forcing "the 'fans' favourite" race car to retire.

In LMP2 class, the Starworks Motorsport team of Enzo Potolicchio, Ryan Dalziel and Tom Kimber-Smith in their HPD ARX-03b Honda 2.8l Turbo V6 engine won in LMP2 class and 7th overall, 24 laps down from the lead Audi. While in GTE Pro class, was won by AF Corse team of Giancarlo Fisichella, Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander won in their Ferrari 458 GTC, finished 17th 42 laps down the leading Audi. While in GTE Am class, was won by Larbre Compétition team of APatrick Bornhauser, Julien Canal and Pedro Lamy in their Chevrolet Corvette C6.R and finished 20th overall, 49 laps behind the leaders.

Three minute highlights package of the race below from Michelin's own Youtube channel. So enjoy.

Audi R18 e-tron quatrro vs Audi R18 Ultra vs Toyota TS030 Hybrid means Le Mans 24 Hours 2012 predictions

The Le Mans 24 hours race is this weekend. Starts from 2pm (UK time) Saturday finishes on 2pm Sunday I am gonna try to tweet most I can in the 24 hours (Twitter page here). Prediction for the race? gonna be a battle between Audi R18 Ultras', Audi R18 e-tron quattros' and Toyota TS030 Hybrids'. Qualifying for the race is finished and the Audi e-tron of Fassler, Lotterer and Treluyer are on pole, and the Audi R18 Ultra of Dumas, Duval and Gene are on the front row. While the first on the Toyotas' of Davidson, Buemi and Sarrazin will start third on the grid for Le Mans 24 hour race.

So predictions for the race, I predict that the Audi Ri8 e-tron of Rinaldo Capello, Tom Kristensenand Allan McNish in my honest opinion will win the 24 hour race, dispite they are starting from fourth place.

But for now some Youtube videos from both Toyota TS030 Hybrid testing at Paul Ricard early in the year. Also, the Audi R18 e-tron quattro at Le Mans during the 3rd and final Qualifying session at night, onboard with Tom Kristensen, listen to the noise that comes out of the R18 e-tron around Le Mans circuit. But, for now enjoy the videos.

F1 Canadian Grand Prix Review

First post for the week, seventh post of the F1 season. Thoughts on yesterdays Canadian Grand Prix.

Good weekend

  • Lewis Hamilton (won the race overall)
  • Romain Grosjean (finished second)
  • Sauber F1 Team (Sergio Pérez finished third, Kamui Kobayashi finished ninth)

Bad weekend

  • Ferrari (Fernarndo Alonso finished 5th, should have won the race, but didn't pitted at the end that cost him a win, Felipe Massa finished 10th, spun in the race, could have been on the podium)
  • Jenson Button (finished 16th, a race weekend too forget)
  • Bruno Senna (finished 17th, not a good weekend from Bruno Senna)
  • Michael Schumacher (DNF, DRS failure)
  • HRT (Pedro de la Rosa DNF Brakes, Narain Karthikeyan, DNF Brakes)

Overall, another very good Canadian Grand Prix from Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Lewis Hamilton won the race overall, becoming the seventh different driver to win the first seven races, which is a record in Formula One history.

The win paid off for Lewis Hamilton on lap 49 for a second tyre stop. Whereas, Alonso and Sebastian Vettel decided to try and make it to the end on their existing Pirelli tyres, but Hamilton had the pace to hunt down and pass both of them for the win at the Canadian Grand Prix and the lead for the drivers championship too. Lewis Hamilton is now two points ahead of Fernarndo Alonso who is second in the standings, and three points ahead of Sebastian Vettel who is third in the standings. A well earned race win from Lewis Hamilton in Canada.

Anyway, that is all. Bye.

Inside a Formula 1 car

Last week, this video showed up on the internet of Sauber doing something that have been done before, cutting a Formula 1 in half from one end to the other. Basically the BMW Sauber F1 car from 2008, split in half, took two years to cut in half and a cameo from Sergio Perez too in the video on where the driver goes, where all the parts on a F1 car goes. A lot to learn to a Formula 1 or anyone who is interested in what's inside a Formula 1 car. Video below, enjoy. And a great video from Sauber too.

Catalan MotoGP Review and F1 Canadian Grand Prix Predictions

A quick review of last weeks MotoGP race in Catalunya. Then, this weekends Canadian Grand Prix Predictions.

A great win for Jorge Lorenzo at his home race at Circuit de Catalunya, on his works Yamaha, a great battle throughout the race between himself and Dani Pedrosa on his Honda. Pedrosa was leading the race until six laps to go, when Lorenzo overtake Pedrosa for the lead, then the race win. So, Dani Pedrosa finished second with five seconds behind race winner Lorenzo. While, Andrea Dovizioso on his Tech 3 Yamaha nine seconds behind Lorenzo, who finished third. While, Current Champion Casey Stoner on his Honda finished forth. half a second behind Dovizioso.

So this weekends Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix Predictions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. A big surprising one Michael Schumacher for the win in his Mercedes, Mark Webber second in the Red Bull and Nico Rosberg third in the Mercedes. Don't forget Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, McLaren drivers,or two Lotus drivers either. Could be a great race this weekend.

Anyway, that is all. Bye.

Pescarolo-Judd 03

A few months back I did a post on the Dome S102.5 were Pescarolo Team will run the LMP1 car for this years Le Mans 24 hour race. Now, Pescarolo will have their new LMP1 coming up for Le Mans 24 hours in three weeks time, called Pescarolo-Judd 03.

The Pescarolo-Judd 03, which is built around the monocoque and suspension of the ill-fated Aston Martin AMR-One. Also, a Judd 3.4-litre V8 engine underneath and Michelin tyres as-well on the Pescarolo-Judd 03.

The Pescarolo-Judd 03 was due to race for the first time at the Spa FIA World Endurance Championship round in May. But, financial problems for Pescarolo Team, delayed in building the car. So, the car will debut at the Le Mans 24 hours race in three weeks time.

Emmanuel Collard, Jean-Christophe Boullion and Stuart Hall will be driving Pescarolo-Judd 03at the Le Mans 24 Hours on June 16/17.

How to rebuild a Group N Rally Car

A documentary I found on a web-site recently, I saw this link onto Vimeo site. A Romanian Rally team called BCR Leasing – Colina Motors team. The 19 minute video shows the rebuilding of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X to a Group N rally car in a detailed, high-quality, from 2011 car to 2012 car and getting ready for the 2012 season ahead. Footnotes below from the Vimeo site.

PR:

“a backstage film about Romanian motorsport, a documentary featuring the rebuild of a Group N Rally car and probably a first in terms of level of detail and quality.

the project began in early November 2011, when dismantling started, and regularly documented the process until the end of December 2011 when the car was ready for tests in Gheorgheni; the ending of the film dates from March 2012 when E. Keleti’s Evo X Mishubishi received its sponsor stickers for a new season with the BCR Leasing – Colina Motors team.

basically the documentary captures up to the smallest detail pretty much all the effort the Colina Motorsports team put in to rebuild the car.

In numbers:
over 20,000 images (for the time lapse) – shot with Drift HD170 Stealth.
dozens of hours of shooting and editing;
filmed with Canon 5D2 and 60D;
technical car data is in the movie – press pause to read them

Also, there is another video of a five minute time-lapse of rebuilding the Group N rally car Mishubishi Lancer Evo X altogether, enjoy.

That is all. Bye.
