It has been announced yesterday, before the start of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend (15/9/17); Toro Rosso has signed a new engine partnership with Honda to supply the team their power-units from the start of the 2018 F1 season on a three year deal in the wake of McLaren severing its ties with Honda.
Honda had intended to enter 2018 F1 season with McLaren and Sauber, but McLaren lost faith and opted to switch to Renault power next season, while Sauber cancelled its plans and renewed a new deal with Ferrari.
Toro Rosso emerged as a viable option for Honda since the Hungarian Grand Prix, which the deal included free power-units to Toro Rosso saving the team millions for next three seasons, also allowing sister team Red Bull to evaluate the Japanese power plants going into 2019 season when their Renault deal is up to renewal.
It marks the fourth year in a row that Toro Rosso will change its engine partner between seasons, having moved from Renault, to Ferrari, back to Renault, and now Honda.
In my opinion, this is no major surprise that the news has happen yesterday. As this has been rumoured for the past weeks that Toro Rosso will swap over to Honda power units for 2018 season.
This is a very good deal for Toro Rosso, as I believe that the Honda power units will cost nothing as the team will be the default works team for next season.
However, the current Honda power units are under-powered and unreliable if it does continue going into 2018 that needs to be improve going into next season to allow Toro Rosso to challenge the midfield teams.
A new challenge ahead for Toro Rosso going into 2018.
