It was confirmed on Tuesday (4/10/16), Mercedes has signed an option to become one of two potential new teams in Formula E for the category's fifth season in 2018/19.
Mercedes revealed that it has signed an option with Formula E to enter the series for the fifth season of the championship, when it is set to expand to twelve teams, subject to the approval of the FIA.
It therefore gives Mercedes the chance to join the category in two years' time, when the current format of mid-race car changes will be scrapped in favour of drivers using one car for the duration of the race.
With the likes of Audi (works motorsport programme from 2017-'18 season with the Abt team) and BMW (engineering partnership with the Andretti team, with an eye on a fully-fledged factory entry from 2018-'19.) entering the series, and Renault won last year's drivers' and teams' titles with the factory e.dams team.
It might be the right time for Mercedes to jump into Formula E with their electric technology.
