Top Six 1980's Formula 1 cars

With Formula 1 returning in a weeks time. This post is the top Six 1980's Formula 1 cars of all time, starting with number six:

Number 6: 1983 Brabham BT52
Story: Brabham BT52 was designed by Gordon Murray, the Brabham BT52 was powered by the BMW four cylinder 1.5 litre turbocharged engine which in 1983 produced about 850 bhp in qualifying, detuned to around 600 bhp for race spec. Brabham BT52 took four wins in 1983, three for Nelson Piquet and one for Riccardo Patrese. While Nelson Piquet driving the Brabham BMW BT52 took the drivers championship in 1983 and winning his second of his third F1 drivers championship. And took Brabham to third place in the Constructors championship that year.



Number 5: 1989-90 McLaren MP4/5
Story: The McLaren MP4/5 was designed by Gordon Murray, Steve Nichols and Neil Oatley. And it's the first of the non turbo Honda F1 cars, the MP4/5 had the Honda 3.5 litre V10 producing around 680 bhp. The McLaren MP4/5 took two constructor titles' in 1989 and 1990 and two drivers titles' with Alain Prost in 1989, and with Ayrton Senna in 1990. Sixteen Grand Prix wins in those two seasons, four for Alain Prost and twelve for Ayrton Senna and controversy in-between those two drivers.



Number 4: 1979-82 Williams FW07
Story: Williams FW07 was designed by Patrick Head and Neil Oatley, the Williams FW07 had the 3 litre Cosworth DFV engine to give Williams two F1 Constructors titles in 1980 and 1981. Also took Alan Jones to the 1980 F1 World Drivers' Championship which is Williams team's first divers and constructors championships as a team. Williams FW07 took 15 race wins overall, eleven wins for Alan Jones, a race win for Clay Regazzoni, and three race wins for Carlos Reutemann in those three and a bit seasons in Formula 1.



Number 3: 1986-87 Williams FW11
Story: The Williams FW11 was designed by Patrick Head and Frank Dernie for the 1986 and 87 F1 seasons. The FW11 had the Honda 1.5 litre V6 turbo engine underneath, which produce over 1000 bhp in qualifying and around 790 bhp in race pace. The Williams FW11 took two F1 Constructor titles' in 1986 and 1987 and a F1 drivers' title for Nelson Piquet as-well. The Williams FW11 took eighteen Grand Prix wins' in those two season. Seven wins' for Nelson Piquet and eleven wins' for Nigel Mansell.



Number 2: 1984-86 McLaren MP4/2
Story: The McLaren MP4/2 took 22 Wins in three seasons in F1, 16 wins for Alain Prost and 6 for Niki Lauda. Also, took two back to back F1 Constructors' titles for Mclaren in 1984 and 1985. And three F1 Drivers' Championships in hands of Niki Lauda in 1984 and Alain Prost in 1985 and 1986. McLaren MP4/2 was designed by John Barnard and had a TAG-Porsche 1.5 litre V6 engine underneath, which produce 850 bhp near the end of 1986 to give the McLaren MP4/2 one of Mclaren's and Formula 1 most successful race car ever.



Number 1: 1988 McLaren MP4/4
Story: The McLaren MP4/4 will be possibly the best McLaren car that have been created from the team and possibly the most dominant racing car in Formula 1 history. The McLaren MP4/4 was design by both Steve Nichols and Gordon Murray. The McLaren MP4/4 has the famous Honda 1.5 litre V6 turbo engine underneath the McLaren MP4/4, the last of the turbos in Formula 1 (until next season that is) which produce over 1000 bhp in qualifying and around 790 bhp in race pace. Which, McLaren took fifteen victories from sixteen races in 1988, eight for Ayrton Senna and seven for Alain Prost, including ten 1-2 finishes, fifteen Poles which Senna took thirteen poles that season. Finally gives McLaren the Constructors Championship in 1998 and Ayrton Senna to the Drivers Championship in 1988 as-well.
