It's Turbo time - Top Six Great Turbo Powered Formula One Cars

With Formula One returning to turbo powered engines for the first time since 1988 season. Already last month Renault have launch their brand new 1.6 litre V6 turbo engine which Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Caterham and possibly Lotus will use for the 2014 season onwards.



And most recently, Mercedes have launch their brand new 1.6 litre V6 turbo engine with a simulated lap around Monza, which Mercedes, McLaren, Force India and Williams will use for the 2014 season onwards as-well.



So this post will be top six Great Turbo Powered Formula One Cars that have been in Formula One. Starting with Number Six:

Number 6: 1979 Renault RS10
Story:
Renault RS10 was designed by François Castaing, Michel Tétu and Marcel Hubert. The Renault RS10 was powered by the Renault-Gordini 1.5 litre turbocharged V6 engine which produce over 500 bhp for race spec. Renault RS10 took one victory in 1979 at the French Grand Prix were Jean-Pierre Jabouille took victory and a first turbo engine win in Formula 1. And took Renault to sixth place in the Constructors championship that year as-well.



But the French Grand Prix will be always remembered was the battle between René Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve for second place for that Grand Prix.



Number 5: 1983 Brabham BT53
Story:
Brabham BT53 was designed by Gordon Murray, the Brabham BT52 was powered by the BMW four cylinder 1.5 litre turbocharged engine which in 1983 produced about 850 bhp in qualifying, detuned to around 600 bhp for race spec. Brabham BT53 took four wins in 1983, three for Nelson Piquet and one for Riccardo Patrese. While Nelson Piquet driving the Brabham BMW BT52 took the drivers championship in 1983 and winning his second of his third F1 drivers championship. And took Brabham to third place in the Constructors championship that year.





Number 4: 1981-4 Ferrari 126 C
Story:
Ferrari 126 C was the team's first attempt at a turbo engined Formula 1 car, it was designed by Mauro Forghieri and Harvey Postlethwaite. The Ferrari 126 C was powered by the Ferrari 1.5 litre turbocharged V6 engine, which produces over 550 bhp at the start of the 1981 season till the end at 1984 season, when it produced about 800 bhp in qualifying, detuned to around 650 bhp for race spec. Ferrari 126 C took ten wins between 1981 till 1984. Gilles Villeneuve, Didier Pironi and Patrick Tambay took two each, three for René Arnoux, and one for Michele Alboreto. Which took, Ferrari to the F1 Constructors' titles in both 1982 and 1983.





Number 3: 1984-86 McLaren MP4/2
Story:
The McLaren MP4/2 was designed by John Barnard and had a TAG-Porsche 1.5 litre V6 engine underneath, which produce 850 bhp near the end of 1986 to give the McLaren MP4/2 one of Mclaren's and Formula 1 most successful race car ever. The McLaren MP4/2 took twenty two wins in three seasons in F1, sixteen wins for Alain Prost and six for Niki Lauda. Also, took two back to back F1 Constructors' titles for Mclaren in 1984 and 1985. And three F1 Drivers' Championships in hands of Niki Lauda in 1984 and Alain Prost in 1985 and 1986.





Number 2: 1986-87 Williams FW11
Story
: The Williams FW11 was designed by Patrick Head and Frank Dernie for the 1986 and 87 F1 seasons. The FW11 had the Honda 1.5 litre V6 turbo engine underneath, which produce over 1000 bhp in qualifying and around 790 bhp in race pace. The Williams FW11 took two F1 Constructor titles' in 1986 and 1987 and a F1 drivers' title for Nelson Piquet as-well. The Williams FW11 took eighteen Grand Prix wins' in those two season. Seven wins' for Nelson Piquet and eleven wins' for Nigel Mansell.





Number 1: 1988 McLaren MP4/4
Story:
The McLaren MP4/4 will be possibly the best McLaren car that have been created from the team and possibly the most dominant racing car in Formula 1 history. The McLaren MP4/4 was design by Gordon Murray. The McLaren MP4/4 has the famous Honda 1.5 litre V6 turbo engine underneath the McLaren MP4/4, the last of the turbos in Formula 1 (until next season that is) which produce over 1000 bhp in qualifying and around 790 bhp in race pace. Which, McLaren took fifteen victories from sixteen races in 1988, eight for Ayrton Senna and seven for Alain Prost, including ten 1-2 finishes, fifteen Poles which Senna took thirteen poles that season. Finally gives McLaren the Constructors Championship in 1998 and Ayrton Senna to the Drivers Championship in 1988 as-well. To give the 1988 McLaren MP4/4 the best Turbo F1 car ever!
