Former Minardi and Jaguar F1 driver Justin Wilson is in a coma and is in critical condition after suffering a "severe head injury" during an IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway, Pocono on Sunday (24/8/15).
"Wilson is currently in a coma and in critical condition while undergoing further evaluation at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pa." IndyCar confirmed.
"IndyCar sends its thoughts and prayers to Justin, his family, and Andretti Autosport during this difficult time."
Officials noted that additional updates will be provided when they become available.
Wilson was involved in a large crash late in the 500-mile race when the leader at the time, Sage Karam, lost control and made heavy impact with the wall. Some of the debris in the crash struck Wilson in the head, requiring him to be airlifted from the track. Karam was shuttled by ambulance to the same hospital for a foot injury.
Thoughts and Prayers to Justin's family and friends at this moment of time.
